Serving Others Despite A Busy Life

I have been thinking a lot lately about serving others. At this stage in my life, it feels impossible to reach outside the needs of my own little family that demands so much, to others that might be in need. However, I believe that the Lord expects so much more of each of us. In the book, Daughters in My Kingdom, there is a quote by George Albert Smith that states, “Our eternal happiness will be in proportion to the way that we devote ourselves to helping others.” When you really think about that statement, it is hard not to … Continue reading

Don’t Put Off Serving Others

Is there one area that you feel like you could improve in your life? Is it studying the scriptures or incorporating gospel teaching into your home? Maybe it involves exercising and eating properly or it could be in reaching out and helping others. These are all areas that many people feel that they could improve in. It is too easy to say that you will take care of it later. This week as I read Elder Eyring’s talk “This Day” I was impressed with how important it is to constantly strive to do better. Elder Eyring really emphasized the need … Continue reading

Others Serving Up a Warm Thanksgiving Dinner

Yesterday, I blogged about celebrities taking time to serve up a Thanksgiving dinner to the needy. But, celebrities weren’t the only ones giving up their time and money to serve those who were hungry. In Albany, New York, Equinox, a community service organization, offer up its 42nd annual Thanksgiving dinner to about 9,000 people. About 500 showed up at the First Presbyterian Church to eat while another 8,500 meals were delivered to homebound residents. About 3,500 volunteers showed up to help prepare the meal which included almost 7,000 pounds of turkey, almost 3,000 pounds of potatoes, 2,350 pounds of green … Continue reading

Preserving the Peace

Much like with marriage, to keep the peace between you and your children, it’s important to learn the fine art of picking battles.  The phrase may seem trite, but knowing how to correctly apply it to your family dynamic can make a huge difference in your quality of life. For example, my daughter struggled with sleep issues for a long time.  And by long time, I mean years… and years and years.  The kid would fight me at bedtime like a combat ninja.  The nightly battles were frustrating, exhausting and downright ugly.  It got so bad that I ended up … Continue reading

Preserving Summer Memories

Now that summer has officially arrived, there’s no time like the present to preserve all those seasonal memories. Whether it’s a cross-country trip to grandma’s house, experiencing the thrills and chills of a world-famous theme park or having fun in the sun at the beach, don’t forget to pack your camera so that you can document every fun-filled moment. Once you get home you can sort through your shots and create a storyline of your summer fun in a themed scrapbook. While you are organizing your pictures think of ways to pair them with appropriate embellishments that will make your … Continue reading

Two LDS Missionaries Die While Serving

Living in Utah, we are fortunate to hear about LDS news that others across the country may not be able to hear about. However, there is a news story that surfaced this week that is so tragic and sad that I can’t stop thinking about it. Three LDS missionaries were biking in their area and were hit by a car. Two were killed, and one survived. The driver took off on foot immediately after the accident, and later surrendered. This all happened in Texas. You can read the news story here. We don’t often hear of missionaries dying on their … Continue reading

Serving Even When You are Tired

My husband is currently in charge of helping our ward organize a “day of service”. I hate to write a negative blog post about something that hopefully will turn out positive, so I apologize ahead of time if it comes out that way. We as Latter-Day Saints should know better than anyone how important it is to serve others. We know that it is expected of us, and yet, often, we do nothing to reach out to those around us. I am as guilty as the next person. This “day of service” has been a struggle for my husband to … Continue reading

Preserving Friendships

Have you seen the movie “The Help”? It’s the perfect friend flick. It examines the bonds that can be formed with individuals who don’t share the same DNA, skin color or social status. You’ll laugh. You’ll cry. But, most of all, you will leave the movie theater thankful for your best friends. I happened to love the movie. I wish I could bottle up all the lessons that were featured in it and place them in a scrapbook. I have five very, very good friends who could benefit from a memory book dedicated to our 30 (plus)-year-old relationship. We’ve seen … Continue reading

The Importance of Preserving Childhood Memories

Part of the reason (okay, one of the primary reasons) I blog is to chronicle some of the sweet or funny moments in my young daughter’s life. After all, she’s not a baby anymore. (Where did my baby go?) She will be seven soon. Seven. How did that happen? Sadly, some of the only solid memories I have of my daughter as a baby come from photos, a few scribbled journal entries, and these blog posts. I am hoping that she will remember all of the good times we shared together without the aid of printed posts, but alas that … Continue reading

Preserving Your Family’s Military History

Many families have one or more ancestors that have served their country through military service. Military service often takes soldiers to far away places, and they often return with very interesting accounts of events that happened around the world. Some stories are somber; stories of losing battles, harsh conditions, and devastating injuries. Some soldiers bring home stories about people that they met or animals that they encountered. I have a relative who served in Vietnam, and he has pictures of a puppy that someone had brought into the barracks. The puppy was a welcome diversion for the soldiers and he … Continue reading
