Here’s an idea for a unique school-themed scrapbook layout: A photo collage of me and other moms with the bloody fingers we got from labeling every. single. school. supply. our kids are required to take to class. I typed up and stuck on more than 100 labels to individual crayons, pencils, markers, folders and notebooks.
Insanity.
And here’s the irony: I’m sure my kid will still get her stuff “accidently” stolen during the school year despite my four hours of hard labor. It’s not like a single white label is going to be a deterrent to kids with itchy fingers or those who can’t read, or the others who simply don’t care about getting caught with his neighbor’s pink eraser.
I’m joking about turning my labeling ordeal into material for a scrapbook layout.
Kind of.
In the end, I will likely give into tradition and craft a non-controversial page design featuring photos of my kid in her freshly-pressed uniform and shiny new shoes. I’ll pepper the page with school-themed stickers, stamps and flocking powder. In addition, on the layouts that I don’t feature journaling blocks or quotes, I plan to include the following short school-themed poems:
Back to School

Today I hurry off to school,
to work and learn and play.
I’m in a brand new grade this year.
What a happy day!
1st Day of School
Author: Patsy Gaut
We went to school today,
my little girl and I.
I worried all through breakfast,
afraid that she might cry.
I watched her walk away
with pride and I was quite alone,
the tears I thought would surely
be hers, are indeed my very own!
Twas the Night Before School Started
Author: unknown
Twas the night before school started
when all through the town
the parents were cheering
it was a riotous sound.
By eight the kids were washed
and tucked into bed
when memories of homework
filled them with dread.
New pencils, new folders, new notebooks too,
new teachers, new friends, the anxiety grew.
The parents just giggled when they heard of this fright
and shouted upstairs: GO TO BED-IT’S A SCHOOL NIGHT!
