Mad Money (2008)

Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah and Katie Holmes star as three federal reserve employees who get away with the impossible: they steal hundreds of thousands of dollars over the course of three years from the Federal reserve. The Plot Thins Bridget Cardigan (Diane Keaton) is the typical rich housewife/socialite married to the typical self absorbed husband who has lost his job. He sits around and becomes depressed. . .in exactly the way that you might think someone that self absorbed would do. Bridget is the mastermind behind the heist with the mantra, “Crime is contagious.” Nina Brewster played by Queen Latifiah, … Continue reading

Homemade Snacks Save Money

My family and I were in Target the other day to pick up a couple of essentials. We wandered in through the snack aisle, and the kids started asking about getting prepackaged granola bars to use as school snacks. I glanced at the prices and got sticker shock. It seems that the prices have gone up and the number and size of these prepackaged granola bars have gone down. In another life, I might have grumbled over the price but still put a couple of packages in the cart. In this life, I asked the kids which kind of granola … Continue reading

Does Homemade Laundry Detergent Really Save Money?

I recently wrote about homemade laundry soap after my daughter stained her clothes with our laundry detergent. Today on my way home from work I stopped and purchased the ingredients, there are only three, soap, Fels Naptha seems to be the most common one to use, washing soda and borax. As important as it is to be green, it’s also always important to me to save money. I did lots of math to see if this is really going to be worth it. The detergent I use and love now is $11.97 for 52 loads, or .23 a load, when … Continue reading

I Made a Deposit! Why Can’t I Access My Money?

Have you ever wondered why you can’t access the money in your account? You made a deposit the day before, so you should be able to access the money right? Not necessarily, most banks still operate on banking hours and days. Banks will have the tellers and ATM machines switch to the next business day usually sometime between 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. Your teller should post a sign that says next business day somewhere in her window. Banks switch over to the next day because all the work that they receive (deposits, checks cashed, withdrawals made) needs to be … Continue reading

Does It Cost More for a Homemade Lunch?

I started out making homemade lunches for my first-born child for financial reasons. It just seemed cheaper that way than to buy lunch from the cafeteria. Years later, all of my kids still pack their lunch bags every day. They actually prefer it because they don’t have to spend time waiting in a cafeteria line or trying to decide on food they might not like. A friend of mine agrees with the preference but not with the cost. She says she winds up spending more money when her kids pack a lunch compared to when they buy it at school. … Continue reading
