Halloween

Today is Halloween. Jessie has been talking about trick-or-treating all day. One of Jessie’s schoolmates got out of her car in the drop-off line wearing her costume. I could have dressed Jessie in her costume. I wonder if she would have wanted to. I wonder how many other children at her school dressed up.

Do you trick or treat? Do you leave the light on at your house and open the door when the bell rings? I love greeting kids in costume at the door. In all my houses I’ve had since I moved out of my parents’ house I haven’t gotten many Halloween visitors, but I still love the night. I love seeing the children and what they’re wearing. I love seeing how young and how old the children are.

When I was growing up and going trick-or-treating there were not many houses I visited where the lights were off or there was a self-serve bowl on the porch. One of my neighbors even handed up hot apple cider. We had so much fun.

The street where I grew up is a Halloween hot spot. I don’t remember it being that way when I was a kid, but it was always a busy place. Now the street is blocked off with no parking. The police patrol because the crowd is so large. My parents will hand out probably a 1000 pieces of candy at least.

Halloween will be more intimate at our house. Generally we’ll see only the children who live in our development. Halloween is the only time we see a lot of this kids and it’s great to see how much they grow and change. I’ll hand out candy until Jessie and Emily are ready to go; then I’ll put the candy out on the porch.

Happy Halloween.
