Music in the Home

Excitement hit our house the other day. A CD I had ordered and been waiting on for over a month arrived – finally. I couldn’t wait to play it. I bought the CD initially on the strength of one song – In My Daughter’s Eyes by Martina McBride. The time I watched this on you tube it reduced me to tears. Some songs are like that. Thankfully I like the rest of the CD as well. Anyone coming to our house would see at a glance both Mick and I love music. For starters we have some of those really … Continue reading

The Influence of Music

Can music influence attitudes towards relationships and marriage? Do songs reflect attitudes towards relationships, and reflect the era or do they shape them? These are the question Mick and I were discussing the other day in the car. We were listening to some old 1960s songs. The theme in so many of them was very much the same. Songs like ‘It’s my Party’ and ‘Judy’s Turn to Cry,’ ‘Oh No, Not My Baby,’ and ‘Lightning Strikes’ were a few but there were myriad others that came out around the same time and they all had a similar theme. The theme … Continue reading

Star Updates: Brokeback the Musical and Leno Rescues McMahon

BROKEBACK THE MUSICAL Hey, if they can do it for “Little House on the Prairie” then why not “Brokeback Mountain?” The love story portrayed on the big screen will soon be revived and sung in one of the nation’s largest theaters thanks to the New York City Opera. The group just commissioned Charles Wuorinen to compose the music for the opera, which will be based on the Academy Award-winning film. Much like the popular movie, which starred Jake Gyllenhaal and the late Heath Ledger, the opera will follow the 20-year love affair of two cowboys who share a secret romance … Continue reading

Country Music News

In case you haven’t heard, Porter Wagoner died Monday not long after the news that he was suffering from lung cancer was released. Dolly Parton announced earlier this week that she was able to sing for Porter and prayed with him during a visit. “It felt good that I had the opportunity to say goodbye properly,” she said. Wagoner, a three-time Grammy winner, died as three more country legends were being inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Vince Gill, Mel Tillis, and Ralph Emery were being inducted Sunday night, not knowing that at 8:25 p.m. Wagoner, inducted into … Continue reading

Mothers Day, a Celebration or a Trial?

Mothers Day can be lovely or it can be a time of pain. For those with good relationships, it’s a chance to get together and celebrate. For those estranged from family or whose mother has died or they live a distance away, it can be a time of misery and loneliness. Yesterday, Mothers Day here, for me was a lovely family day. Our daughter and her husband were unable to come down to us. That’s the way it is when your daughter is married to someone in ministry and Mothers Day falls on a Sunday. Sunday for them is a … Continue reading

D23 Expo Headed to Japan

D23, the official Disney fan club, just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  Tickets are already on sale for the much-anticipated D23 Expo in August, and the club just announced another huge convention for 2013, this one abroad.  The D23 Expo is hitting the road, and will come to Japan on October 12-14, 2013. The D23 Expo Japan will not just be a carbon copy of the one held in Anaheim months prior.  Although there will be a lot of overlap, in merchandise and in smaller events, the Japan expo will be unique.  It’ll be held mostly in Japanese, with events … Continue reading

In Memoriam 2012 – Part 6

And, this is my final installment of the blog of famous people we lost in 2012, even though we still have one day left in the year: October 2012 10 – Alex Karras – Kidney Failure (77) Karras came to fame when he played in the NFL, but he had a second career as an actor.  He appeared in Blazing Saddles and starred as the father in “Webster.” 13 – Gary Collins – Natural Causes (74) Collins co-starred in “The Wackiest Ship in the Army”, “Iron Horse,” and “The Sixth Sense” as well as guest starred in many shows during … Continue reading

Disco Loses Two Icons – Part 2

Yesterday, I was talking about how disco fans took a terrible hit this week with Donna Summer and Robin Gibb both dying within a week. Robin Gibb had been having health issues as of late, including a blocked intestine and liver and colon cancer. Earlier this year, he contracted pneumonia and fell into a coma, before regaining consciousness, much to the amazement of his physicians. He died on May 20th, finally succumbing to his cancers. Robin Gibb, along with brothers Maurice and Barry, formed the Bee Gees in the ‘60s and found success with such songs as “Massachusetts,” “Words,” “Lonely … Continue reading

Disco Loses Two Icons – Part 1

It was a one-two punch to disco this week as we lost both the woman many hailed as the Queen of Disco, Donna Summer, and a man who certainly would be in the running for King of Disco, Robin Gibb. Donna Summer died May 17th of lung cancer at the age of 63. A non-smoker, Summer believed her disease may have been due to inhaling the debris after 9/11. Summer began her career singing backup for Three Dog Night before breaking out on her own with the hit … Continue reading

Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival 2012

Disney fans have one big sign for the coming of spring, and it has nothing to do with a certain ceremonial groundhog. Nope, it’s something much more floral. Once the Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival has kicked off, we know that spring is coming. Of course this is a bit of a cheat; as I said last year, the festival takes place in Orlando. That means it’s nice and warm for them year round. Oh, I know that some Orlando residents complain of the chilly 50-degree weather they sometimes get in the winter, but the rest of us living … Continue reading
