Virginia Tech Shooting Anniversary

If the story did not touch your life in some way personally, many of you were touched through the news reporting and media. The school suffered great sadness and loss after the shootings. Many were criticized and feelings raged high. Still today families and school administrators are trying to cope with and make sense of the happenings that took place on that day. Today, here we are one … Continue reading

Can Virginia Tech Be Blamed For The School Shootings?

We all remember the horrible Virginia Tech shootings that occurred several months ago. Over thirty people, students and faculty, lost their lives. After incidents such as this, people start questioning what could have been done differently. Families of the victims look for something or someone to blame for their loss. I cannot say that I would not do the same. Late last month, a panel decided that indeed Virginia Tech could have done something differently and saved lives. It was determined that if students were notified earlier, lives would have likely been saved. From the time the first shootings happened, … Continue reading

Text Message Warnings

Schools were once a safe haven. Parents and students did not even think of acts of crime occurring at the houses of education. However, time and media have shown us differently. Acts, such as the one several months ago at Virginia Tech, have students, parents, and educators concerned and on the alert for better security and protection in schools. Some schools have metal detector entrances. Others have security guards. Many train students on procedures to carry out in case of strangers or emergencies. Threats are taken seriously and administrators check into any claims of violence. Unfortunately media attention to one … Continue reading

Backlash Against Korean Adoptees/Families?

Some Koreans, and adoptive parents of Korean-born children, have expressed fear of a backlash since the Virginia Tech shootings by a Korean-born young man. Seung-Hui Cho was a South Korean citizen and a legal permanent resident of the US who came here at the age of eight. I have not personally encountered racism as a multiracial family except on one occasion when another child said of (and in front of) my daughter, “She doesn’t look like an American.” I have worried that if tensions escalated with North Korea Koreans might be judged on their appearance the way some people of … Continue reading

What’s the Big Deal?

Jennifer Aniston had lunch with musician John Mayer in Miami last week. Whoo-hoo. What’s the big deal? Frankly, I don’t think it’s worth mentioning, but for some reason news of this alleged “intimate” luncheon is making headlines the world over. For those of you who haven’t opened a newspaper or surfed the Internet this weekend, apparently the former “Friends” star had a late private lunch with Mayer at a trendy Miami eatery—-which, by the way, the couple reportedly had opened just for them—Friday afternoon, before reuniting again for a lengthy dinner later that night. According to news reports, Aniston and … Continue reading
