How to Plan Trouble-Free Family Outings

One of the saddest realities for families with special needs children is that leisure time can seem like an impossible dream. The more severe the child’s disability, the harder it is to plan vacations, outings, or even a quick trip to the grocery store. Many families become prisoners of their homes. It just feels like too much trouble, and too scary, to get out and experience fun and recreation. What if you forget important medical equipment? What if something goes wrong? Maybe the child has serious behavior problems. Maybe she screams constantly or causes a spectacle in public. The thought … Continue reading

Pet Friendly Outings: Bark in the Park

I am a HUGE fan of our local minor league baseball team, the Lakewood BlueClaws. The games are lots of fun, affordable, and just about every seat has a fantastic view. But I especially love their special events — like this weekend’s Bark in the Park. Bark in the Park is a chance for dog lovers and baseball lovers — or dog loving baseball fans, or baseball loving dog parents, or however you want to count it — to bring their pups out to a game! This obviously isn’t an event that will be a good fit for every dog. … Continue reading

Wedding Bells Set To Ring For English Beauty

Elizabeth Hurley, the gorgeous (in my opinion) model turned actress, who has starred in such movies as 1999’s Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and 2000’s Bedazzled is planning a trip down the aisle. Hurley tells the Italian version of Vanity Fair that she will soon wed her boyfriend of three years, Indian businessman Arun Nayar. “I can’t reveal the date, but it’s very close,” the 41-year-old Hurley tells the magazine. “And we are also thinking of having a child.” Personally, I couldn’t be happier for her. Like many others I had no clue who Elizabeth Hurley was until … Continue reading

A Much Needed Family Outing

Family outings are few and far between in my family.  Even though we try to do things together as a family more often, it always seems like there is something more important and dire that needs to be done instead.  As our small family struggles to find the balance between job work, dissertation  work, house work, and play, we are often too exhausted to make our much needed family outings happen.  However, the opportunity for a family outing arose rather spontaneously and we jumped at the chance to get out of the house and do something fun with our children. … Continue reading

There’s Nothing To Do!

Finding things to do with your children that are entertaining and inexpensive is always a challenge, but never more so than when you are single. One income means that the entertainment budget is much smaller than it was before, this can be difficult if your kids are used to frequent family outings. It’s amazing how many things you can find to do that are no or low cost, once it becomes a necessity. Every town offers things for children to do, activities to keep them involved and busy. Here is a short list of things that I’ve found that are … Continue reading

If I Could Start Over Again, Thoughts from a homeschool veteran

I don’t know If I can really call myself a homeschool veteran just just yet because I have not graduated a homeschooler. I have however, gotten my kids to the high school stage and am continuing to homeschool them. 75% of homeschoolers (my best bet)decide to stop homeschooling by this point. This is not a condemnation, just a fact, as each family must do what is best for them. If I had to do it again, as in start from scratch with a new child in Kindergarten, I would certainly do things differently. There are also some things I would … Continue reading

Keep Inviting Them (Even If They Say “No”)

At 16, 17 and 18, my kids are starting to come back around—not that there were terribly lost, but hanging out with Mom was not something they wanted to do there for a couple years. My youngest is still a little wary, but we did have lunch together (and then another dinner out) for the first time in a LONG time a couple weeks ago. It is absolutely normal and natural for adolescents to avoid hanging out in public or even in private with mom and/or dad, but that does not mean we should give up trying to connect. Once … Continue reading

France’s President Courts Famous Model—Is a Wedding in the Works?

If you ask supermodel Carla Bruni’s mother then the answer is “yes.” At least that’s what is being trumpeted on the front page of France’s “Le Parisien.” According to Bruni’s mother, Marisa Borini, official confirmation could come as early as January 1st. If you haven’t been following the whirlwind (and slightly bizarre) romance between French President Nicolas Sarkozy and model-turned-singer-songwriter Bruni then allow me to get you up to speed. Less than three months ago the 52-year-old Sarkozy divorced his second wife Cecilia. Then, about a month later he met the 39-year-old former supermodel at a dinner party in Paris. … Continue reading

Vacation With George

Regular readers of my blog know that my young daughter is a HUGE Curious George fan. As such, I’ve researched many George inspired travel destinations. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as Curious George World or The Man with the Yellow Hat Land so we settle for places such as Curious George Goes to Wordsworth. In the books and on the PBS series, Curious George leaves the jungle and returns with the man to the big city, but when it’s time for them to take a vacation they often head to the country. Many speculate that the country home depicted … Continue reading
