If your family has suffered with head lice, here is new hope. These tips should help you get rid of lice, and keep them from ever coming back! Mix about half a cup each of olive oil and white vinegar together and stir in two teaspoons of “tea tree oil.” Tea tree oil is much less expensive, not to mention less toxic, than some chemical treatments. D23 Expo Headed to Japan

D23, the official Disney fan club, just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  Tickets are already on sale for the much-anticipated D23 Expo in August, and the club just announced another huge convention for 2013, this one abroad.  The D23 Expo is hitting the road, and will come to Japan on October 12-14, 2013. The D23 Expo Japan will not just be a carbon copy of the one held in Anaheim months prior.  Although there will be a lot of overlap, in merchandise and in smaller events, the Japan expo will be unique.  It’ll be held mostly in Japanese, with events … Continue reading

Spring Ahead

I can’t wait for spring to arrive. Actually, I’d love to fast forward to summer.  However, when it’s 2 degrees out with a windchill factor of 25 below zero, I will happily settle for a shot of spring. Since I can’t control Mother Nature, I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands by injecting a little spring fun into our home.  My 8-year-old is sick and tired of the snow and cold, but we can’t afford a trip to the Caribbean, so we’re making do with the following budget-conscious spring-themed activities: Spring Art:  Let your kids flex their creative … Continue reading

Preschool Health: Lice

One word that causes panic in parents is lice. I remember when I was doing home day care and a mom told me her child had lice. I was sickened. The thought of lice crawling around my home just waiting for a head of hair to jump on made me panic. The mom who had the child was lice was in a panic cleaning her home and washing her child’s hair. Thankfully for me the lice did not seem to stick around my house as no one ended up getting it. However, it is an ongoing concern and when it … Continue reading

Honoring Alice Davis: Legendary Disney Costume Designer

Costumes designed by Alice Davis This year I missed out on my annual tradition of profiling important women in Disney history for Women’s History Month. My March was very busy this year so I just didn’t have time to do the necessary research. Luckily, the perfect profile has fallen into my lap. This month costume designer Alice Davis was honored on Disneyland’s Main Street, USA, as a new window in her honor was unveiled. Alice Davis isn’t a name you’ll hear much when talking about the movies; she only had involvement in a couple, including, “Sleeping Beauty.” Her stamp is … Continue reading

Home Based Professionals, Hold Your Heads High

Sometimes I like to take a little time to think about what has changed from the time that I started my two home – based businesses a little over two years ago until now. Today, I realized that one major change that has occurred over that period of time is how I think about myself and my businesses. That has impacted the image that I present to others regarding not only myself, but my businesses as well. Believe it or not, I think that these changes are responsible from my transition from being not busy enough and looking for additional … Continue reading

Where Might “Once Upon A Time” Be Headed?

We’re big fans of ABC’s “Once Upon A Time” around here on families.com. I’ve discussed the show before, and Mary Ann’s reviewed one of the latest episodes. The Disney-inspired drama recently took a short break for the holidays, but it’s going to be back with new episodes starting this coming Sunday, January 8. I’m not planning to review each episode as it comes along. But now that we’re about halfway through the season I think it will be interesting to take a moment to consider where the show has been, and where it might be going. Emma, the daughter of … Continue reading

Should You Keep That Professional License?

One reason that many home-based professionals work at home is so that they can fulfill the role of stay at home parent. These professionals often find or create home-based work in the same field that they were working in prior to leaving the world of traditional work. When a parent leaves the world of traditional work for the dual career of home-based work and parenting, there are always many things to think about and many decisions to make. One major decision is that of whether to keep a professional license active. If the stay at home parent holds any type … Continue reading

The Reality of Having a Licensed Driver

I have been up since 4 a.m. and it isn’t on purpose. I woke up to use the bathroom but when I tried to settle back to sleep, all I could think about was the new chapter ahead of our family. My 16-year-old son passed his driver’s license test yesterday. The state of Wisconsin has made it legal for him to drive…by himself. I really wasn’t prepared for the feelings this would dredge up. I was torn between excitement for him, a sense of relief that soon my days of driving him all over town would be done but then … Continue reading
