Lose Weight, Avoid Breast Cancer?

I have already made up my mind that after the holidays, I am dieting.  Of course, I’ve said that on and off now for the last two years, but next June, I turn 50 and I know it will just get harder and harder to lose weight. Today, I read another incentive to help me take the pounds off.  A recent study by Dr. Paul S. MacLean, associate professor of medicine at the University of Colorado Anschutz Health and Wellness Center, and colleagues hints to the fact that perimenopausal women may be able to lessen their chances of getting breast … Continue reading

In Honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, here are three foods to fight cancer and a recipe to implement tonight. Salmon Eating fish twice a week is a healthy step that can help fight cancer if that fish is salmon. Salmon is rich in fish oil and contains omega-3 fatty acids. Research has shown that omega-3 fatty acid lowers the risk of breast cancer. It also is an anti-inflammatory and improves blood flow. Tomatoes Another anti-inflammatory food is tomatoes. Tomatoes contain lycopene which helps fight cancer as it is an antioxidant. It is a versatile vegetable that can be used … Continue reading

Exercise for the Breast Cancer Survivor

It is “Breast Cancer Awareness Month,” so let’s focus on the benefits of exercise. Studies have shown that there is a reduction in mortality and recurrence for those who participate in regular exercise. The problem is that despite this, too many breast cancer patients don’t keep active. Sometimes it is for physical reasons, the toll of treatment on the body and feeling tired. Other times it is emotional, just not having the motivation to get moving. This is where supervised exercise programs can help, which many hospitals and medical centers offer. The problem is that once the program has ended, … Continue reading

Uninsured Woman Fakes Breast Cancer to Get Implants

A woman in Phoenix, Arizona, told people that she had breast cancer. She said that she would need a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction, and that she was uninsured. Fundraisers were held. Later, it was discovered that the woman didn’t have breast cancer at all. She lied so she could afford to buy breast implants. A twenty-seven year old woman named Jami Lynn Toler has been charged with fraud and theft after convincing people to raise money for cancer treatment that she did not need. She did not need cancer treatment because she did not have breast cancer. In fact, … Continue reading

Yoga Boosts Energy and Reduces Fatigue in Breast Cancer Survivors

In my last Fitness blog I addressed the issue of yoga being a potentially dangerous form of fitness. Not that I believe yoga in itself is dangerous but I do agree that doing it wrong could lead to injuries. Well now we are going to consider the flipside of yoga, a health benefit recently discovered in a small study. I read an article in “Reuters Health” that talked about survivors of breast cancer benefiting from yoga. Apparently fatigue can become a lifelong casualty for a surviving breast cancer patient. Many don’t understand why this continues to be a problem, but … Continue reading

Breast Cancer Screening and Family History

As Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes to a close, I would like to take the opportunity to talk a little more about breast cancer and how it relates to family history. It has been well established that a family history of breast cancer is one factor that increases an individual’s risk for developing breast cancer themselves. It has also been well established that the earlier breast cancer is detected and treated, the better a person’s chance is of beating the disease. If you have a relative who has battled breast cancer, it is a good idea to be screened for … Continue reading

Breast Cancer Awareness

October is breast cancer awareness month. As a single mother it is so important to take care of your health. Your children are depending on you to be healthy for them. Of course there are times when things happen that are completely out of your control. You can be eating right, exercising, doing all the right things and still end up with this life threatening disease. The important thing is that you are doing routine self exams and annual mammograms so that you can catch it early on. We all know that mammograms aren’t very fun. They are painful and … Continue reading

Breast Cancer Fundraising

On October 30th my friend Nicole is going to be participating in the Making Strides: Breast Cancer Walk to Never Lose Hope. The team she is on is being led by her daughter. One thing I have seen is that they are having some trouble raising their funds to meet their goal. Now this is rather surprising to me I wonder if this is because of all the different cancer organizations are starting their own fundraising walks or if the financial crisis in America is keeping the money in peoples wallets instead of supporting great causes like this. I had … Continue reading

It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month !

So it is October again so that means it is breast cancer awareness month! Now for a breast cancer survivor like me every month is breast cancer awareness I don’t think a week has passed without thinking about it. I used to think about it all day every day so once a week is a big improvement for me. When October comes around have you noticed everything turns pink? I was driving by a feed store today and they have pink canopies outside, pink balloons even the dog food bags were pink. Now it is great that breast cancer is … Continue reading

Family History and Breast Cancer Risk

It is almost October, and while many of us associate October with orange and black, October is also a very pink month. October is breast cancer awareness month, and breast cancer risk has been shown to be associated with family history, among other things. I knew that there was a connection between family history and breast cancer risk but I did not know exactly how it worked so I decided to find out. Some cases of breast cancer are associated with mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene. These genetic mutations do not guarantee that a person will develop breast … Continue reading
